Obituary of Helen P. Bickford

Helen Pearl (nee Martin) Bickford was born in Woodbury, New Jersey, county of Gloucester on October 20, 1918. Her parents were Pearl Neve (nee Weatherby) Martin and Nathanial Howard Martin of Woodbury Heights, New Jersey and Circle M Ranch, Deer Run, West Virginia. Helen was baptized June 8, 1919 at the Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, and continued to regularly attended Church throughout her life. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Woodbury Heights, NJ. After she married she moved to Glassboro, NJ in October 1951, she joined the First Presbyterian Church in Glassboro, NJ, and she later joined the United Methodist Church in Glassboro, NJ before moving to Peoria, Arizona in September 2011 to live with her daughter Gayle Anderson. She became a member of the Dove of the Desert United Methodist Church Glendale, Arizona. During her early years Helen attended and taught Sunday school. She played the piano, studied Women's clothing design, was a legal secretary, purchasing agent, and took classes at Temple University, and she kept the books for her Father's Construction Company. During WWII she worked as a secretary during the daytime and as a nurse at night to contribute to the war effort. She married Robert G. Bickford of Pitman, NJ and Wisconsin on June 26, 1948. Never one to be idle, throughout her child rearing years in the early 1950's and 1960's she worked at various home based businesses selling clothes, accordions (which she could play), and volunteered regularly at the Presbyterian church in Glassboro, NJ. When her youngest child entered Kindergarten in 1965 she went back to work as a secretary, and she retired from her Secretarial position with Glassboro State College (now Rowan University.) Helen loved photography and was a member of the Cameraette Club in Southern NJ, and she won first prize for her flower photo from her trip to the Hawaiian Islands. Helen was always quick to help out, good natured, and a wonderful and loving human being. She was the Matriarch of her family, and she will be greatly missed. Helen was predeceased by her husband Robert G. Bickford in (April 2001), Parents Pearl N. (nee Weatherby) and Nathanial H. Martin, of Woodbury Heights, NJ and Deer Run, West Virginia, and also predeceased by her sister Natalie Gould. Helen is survived by her daughter Gayle Anderson (husband John Scoleri), Granddaughter, Tiffany Cram and husband Bret, her Great Grandchildren Lane and Mallory Capps. She is also, survived by her son David Bickford of Swedesboro, NJ; daughter June Harden, Grandson's Michael Harden (Carroll), Great Grandchildren Ayla and Rowan; and grandson Christopher Harden (Brittney), numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Friends may greet the family on Saturday, July 1, 2017 from 7-9pm in the Kelley Funeral Home, 125 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ. Funeral service will be Sunday, July 2, 2017 at 1pm in the Funeral Home.
