Obituary of Dorothy Mtton Hendershot

Dorothy Mitton Hendershot, age 88, of Newton, passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at United Methodist Communities at Bristol Glen in Newton following a long and determined battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born and raised in Pitman, Dot lived in Pitman until 1970 when she moved to Fredon. She worked in the offices of the Pitman, Newton, Hampton and Kittatinny School systems. She was active in her Methodist churches in Pitman and Branchville and also enjoyed singing in the choir. She belonged to the Junior Women's Club and the Fredon Auxiliary of Newton Memorial Hospital, serving as president of the auxiliary. Dot spent many hours volunteering at Newton Memorial Hospital and was a driving force in getting a chapel built at the hospital. Dot's life was defined by her love of God, family and friends. She touched everyone she met with her kindness and genuine caring. Dot had many interests, including bridge, golf, reading, travel, playing the organ and telling jokes. Dot was married to Joseph (Bud) Mitton for 34 years until his death in 1983. Dot married Clark Hendershot in 1989; Clark passed away in 2016. She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Mitton of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and Gail Larzelere and husband, Michael, of Franklinville; four grandchildren, Bryon, Charlie, Joe, and Michelle Larzelere; three great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Jayden and Jordan; three stepdaughters, Peggy Schaberg and husband, George, of Fredon, Jan Hendershot of Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, and Sharon Drake and husband, Robert, of Great Meadows; four step-grandchildren, Margriet Schaberg, George Schaberg and wife, Tara-Lynn, and Bryan and Brittany Drake. Dot is also survived by her sisters, Ruth Schmoll and Elizabeth (Betty) Parker; as well as six nieces and nephews. Local visitation will be held on Thursday, July 6, from 6 to 8 pm at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton, NJ. Friends may call on Saturday, July 8 from 10-11am in the KELLEY FUNERAL HOME, 125 Pitman Ave., Pitman, NJ. Funeral services will be 11am. Interment in Bethel Cemetery.
