Barbara S. Olderman, 72, of Pitman passed away on July 24, 2017 at Inspira Medical Center in Woodbury. Born January 27, 1945, Barbara received her teaching degree from Edinboro University in 1967. For decades, she was committed to her work as a special education teacher, working at numerous public and private schools. At the end of her career, she turned her focus to supporting families caring for a loved one with a developmental disability by running the Respite Program at Durand Academy in Woodbury. Throughout her life, and especially in retirement, Barbara was an avid reader and music lover, and loved taking trips to the beach (her "happy place") with her husband. She was selfless, compassionate, and above all else, she was dedicated to her family. Most recently, she has cherished her time with her five grandchildren (8, 8, 6, 5, and 4) and found great joy in being their "Nana" and watching them grow.
Barbara is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 49 years Michael; mother Helyn Murray; son Jeff (Tara) Olderman of Devon, PA; daughter Meredith (Russell) Gibson of Wayne, PA; daughter Kate (Robert) Tavella of Haddonfield, NJ; and five grandchildren: Max and Carter Olderman; Lane Gibson; and James and Jillian Tavella. She is preceded in death by her father Robert and brother Robert.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Barbara's memory to Autism Speaks www.autismspeaks.org.
The family would like to thank the team at Inspira Medical Center, and their wonderful friends who helped them through this difficult time. Memories may be shared at www.kelleyfhpitman.com.
