Obituary of Barbara Jeanne Lawton

Barbara Jeanne (Braun) Lawton, age 68, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 18 in Deptford, NJ. Mrs. Lawton was born in Atlantic City and lived most of her life in Pitman, NJ. She graduated from Pitman High School in 1966 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Houghton College in 1970 and a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Arkansas in 1973. She served on the faculty of Gloucester County College for 15 years, teaching in the English Department and enriching the lives of many students. Mrs. Lawton was a deeply committed follower of Jesus Christ. Throughout much of her life, she was involved in ministry at Pitman Alliance Church (later Faith Alliance Church in Sewell), serving as a pianist, Sunday school teacher, and lay leader in the church, to name a few. She later became involved in ministry at Fellowship Bible Church in Sewell, where she continued her music ministry, involvement in women's ministry, and teaching the women's Bible study. Mrs. Lawton was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 13 years, Stephen L. Lawton, of Pitman. She is survived by her sons Jeffrey and his wife Anna, of Collegeville, PA, and John and his wife Heather, of Minneapolis, MN, and special sister Carol Norcross, of Pitman, as well as three grandchildren, Christopher, Anne, and Peter. A memorial service in celebration of her life will take place at 10:30 am on Friday, February 10 at Fellowship Bible Church, 590 Jackson Road, Sewell, NJ 08080. Burial took place in Eglington Cemetery in Clarksboro. Arrangements were under the direction of the Kelley Funeral Home, Pitman. www.kelleyfhpitman.com.
