Obituary of Donald Douglas Brown

Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Donald Douglas Brown, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus The College of New Jersey After a long battle with lung cancer, Dr. Donald Brown passed peacefully on April 2, 2017, with his loving wife Judith (nee Kelley) holding his hand. He is survived by his children Kevin Brown, Diana Patterson, Timothy Brown (wife Linda), and Laura Brown Aksu (husband Yaman); stepchildren Judith Bynum and Kevin Kloss (wife Karen); grandchildren Rhonda, Rachel, Dan, Ben, and Kate (deceased); great-grandchildren Pacey, Haley, Hannah, and Mia; sister Helen McAdams and nephew James Manning. For thirty years, Dr. Brown taught classes in health and human sexuality at The College of New Jersey. He was a wise educator, counselor, and mentor. His popular classes emphasized the importance of love, respect, honesty, integrity, and compassion in the lives of his students. He organized and taught Penn State University graduate courses for many years. He was known as a dynamic and humorous public speaker who gave hundreds of presentations at local, state, and national levels. Dr. Brown's contributions to the field of human sexuality were honored when he was invited to become one of the fifty founding members of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. Dr. Brown served as a consultant to more than fifty school districts in New Jersey, as well as the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services. He was an editor and writer for the New York State health education curriculum and a popular columnist for the Burlington County Times, and The College of New Jersey campus newspaper. Dr. Brown also maintained a private practice as a certified sex therapist. Dr. Brown's 1972 doctoral dissertation, funded by the Central Ohio Heart Association, dealt with the delay-time treatment of myocardial infarctions. Working with cardiologist Dr. Louis Black, this study demonstrated that a public education program combined with the immediate treatment and monitoring of emergency patients with chest pains can save lives. In connection with other studies, this protocol was adopted, saving thousands of lives every year in the United States and throughout the world. Dr. Brown was a Navy veteran who served as a medical corpsman with the Marines in the Far East at the end of the Korean Conflict. A Memorial Service will be held at noon on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the KELLEY FUNERAL HOME, 125 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ, where friends may call after 11AM. Burial will be private at the Gloucester County Veteran's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to The Children's Home, 10 Children's Way, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 (https://www.childrenshome.us).
