Richard "Dick" Albert Runner, 78 years old, of Pitman, passed away quietly on Saturday, August 12, with his family by his side after a short but hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born in Paulsboro, raised in Woodbury, and graduated from Woodbury High School in 1956. After graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, where he served as an aircraft mechanic. After leaving the Air Force, he continued to work in the airline industry. Eventually, he began a long career in construction as a Project Supervisor, and became a Master Carpenter. He also obtained his degree from Gloucester County College as a Building Inspector. He spent many years as an elected Councilman and served as the Director of Public Safety for Pitman in the 1970's and 1980's. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pitman for over 40 years, and was a former member of the Y's Men Association. Dick and his wife Pati celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past November. Predeceased by his son Chris A. Runner. Survived by his wife Patricia G. (nee Lane), daughters; Mary (Greg) Lawrence, Linda Runner, Rebecka (Darryl) Runner-Draper, Elizabeth (Matthew) Shaaber, grandchildren; Amanda (Bobby) Cleek, Elli Tricia Runner-Draper, Christopher Runner, Kyle Runner, and Luke Hartmann. Friends may call on Wednesday from 9 to 11AM in the KELLEY FUNERAL HOME, 125 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ. Funeral service at 11AM. Interment Glouc. Co. Veteran's Cemetery.
