Obituary of Peter Paul Mitchell

Please share a memory of Peter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Peter Paul Mitchell passed away peacefully in his home in Glassboro, New Jersey while surrounded by his wife Kathy and family on March 17, 2019. He was born December 17, 1941 in Camden, New Jersey to Salvatore and Mary Mitchell, but spent most of his life in Glassboro, NJ. He was a graduate of Glassboro High School and Glassboro State College. He received a Master of Science degree at Syracuse University and a Doctor of Education at Suffield University.

Pete taught science with enthusiasm at Pitman High School, where he also coached football. He loved his players and was extremely saddened when some of them gave their lives during the Vietnam War. Pete also worked part time at Mitchell Tire Service, and in his free time he played tennis, lovingly referring to himself as a “tennis bum.” He later became one of the original faculty at Gloucester County College, where he taught microbiology and biology for the remainder of his career. He loved teaching students about science and had a sincere interest in counseling students (and relatives) about their future career opportunities.

Pete was extroverted and a good conversationalist. He enjoyed watching football and was happy to take anyone to a college football game who was interested in learning about the sport. He loved traveling with his wife and neighbors, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and visiting Longwood Gardens. His daily routine included going to the grocery store and gas station, helping to keep the house clean, and checking in on his relatives. Peter belonged to Saint Bridget’s Church in Glassboro and Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Pitman, NJ. More than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Pete was preceded in death by his sister Mafalda (Mitchell) Mannino, brother John Mitchell, sister Margaret (Mitchell) Valora, brother Joe Mitchell and sister Kay (Mitchell) Marchesani. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Kathleen (Flick) Mitchell, brother Paul Mitchell of Richwood, NJ, son Mark Mitchell (Heidi) of Winston Salem, NC, daughter Danielle Worth of Ocklawaha, FL, and grandchildren Olivia Mitchell of Los Angeles, CA and Eric Mitchell of New York, NY.

A viewing will be held at Kelley Funeral Home in Pitman on Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 AM at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Pitman. Interment will be held in Manahath Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Pete’s name to the American Cancer Society -  1851 Old Cuthbert Rd, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034. Memories may be shared at www.kelleyfhpitman.com
