Obituary of Austin Robbins

Please share a memory of Austin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dr. Austin Robbins, D.D.S., age 89, died on October 22, 2019 at his home in South Hampton, NJ.  Austin graduated from Millville High School in 1948, attended Juniata College in 1950 and his D.D.S from University of Pennsylvania in 1954.  Austin also attended Grace Theological Seminary in 1959.

Austin served as a Dental Officer in the US Navy from 1953-1959. He attained Lt. Commander.  From 1959-1972, Austin founded the first dental clinic and worked as a staff dentist with the Centre Medical des E.E.F., Boguila, Rep Centrafricaine.. In 1972 he became a staff dentist with the Hospital of Leesburg, NJ. In 1969, Austin was appointed Associate in Operative Dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School and became Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry from 1972-1979.  During this time, he served in the faculty senate, steering committee, Executive Council for School of Dental Medicine, and the Advisory Committee for Restorative Dental Medicine.  In 1979, Austin became Professor of Operative Dentistry at Temple University where he served on the Student Affairs Committee, Academic and Professional Relations Committee and Clinical Student Advisor.  He taught at Georgetown University from 1984 until 1990. He then practiced dentistry in Bridgeton until his retirement.

Austin was a member of the Omicron Kappa Epsilon Chapter, OKU President ETA Chapter, Medical Missionary to Central Africa, Southern Dental Society of NJ, NJ State Dental Society, Christian Medical Society, American Association of Dental Schools and Creation Research Society.

He received the Earl Banks Hoyt Award, National Patent Development Research Grant, Temple University Grant in Research.

As an ordained minister, Austin was also very active in his church.  He taught many adult bible classes, served on the Board of Directors for Associates for Biblical Research and served as a Faculty Advisor for Penn Christian Fellowship.

Predeceased by his wife Mildred Robbins.

Survived by his wife of 6 years Barbara J. (nee Hills), children Bruce (Carol), Dr. Susan Robbins, Patrice Robbins Rao (Mural), Christopher (Monica) 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Friends may greet the family on Friday 7-9pm and Saturday 9-10:30am in the Kelley Funeral Home, 125 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ.  Funeral service will be Saturday at 11am in Fellowship Bible Church, 590 Jackson Rd., Sewell, NJ 08080.  Interment Cumberland County Veteran’s Cemetery.
