Well, I've finally decided I have to write this farewell note about my good friend. It may sound crazy, but I guess I thought until I did this, I didn't have to officially acknowledge Dick was not with us any longer. I'm a USNA classmate and companymate of Dick - I'm the one whose wife bought Dick's mosport green 1966 Corvette when I was on a WestPac cruise, and Dick was enroute to his ship in Hawaii. We still have the vette, and I can't tell you how many times he asked "when are you gonna drive my vette up here to New Jersey?" I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was mine, not his.
First, my best wishes to Gene and other members of her and Dick's families. The loss of a loved one like Dick is not easy to accept, and I truly wish that the many pleasant memories of Dick along with the strength of loved ones will comfort you and help you deal with your loss. I'm so very grateful that I finally got to meet Gene at a Navy game tailgate last fall - a bright, cheerful lady with a genuine and quick smile that clearly explained why she was the center of Dick's life.
Thanks to the old geezer practice of sharing cartoons, political commentary, jokes, and sea stories via email, Dick and I became kindred spirits the last seven or eight years - this after not having seen one another since our paths last crossed in Long Beach in 1970. He was a man of conviction and principle, and he was eager to share his opinion. I'm proud to say that like his other classmates, teammates, shipmates, and dear friends, we are better human beings for having had the opportunity to live a life shared with Dick Salmon.
You're a good man Dick Salmon, we admired you, we respected you, we loved you, and we miss you. I know the devil does not want you, and now you have the good Lord to share your opinions with.
Rest in Peace my friend.

When we were kids, Dick was king of the neighborhood. He organized so many activities– poker around a homemade poker table, running toy race cars around the basketball court in the backyard, green plastic soldiers in the grass, touch football in the park, bubble gum cards in bicycle wheels, marble tournaments, and my favorite – sledding in the dell. We all followed him.
I remember a Saturday morning when I was little and Dick woke me up and asked if I wanted to go someplace with him. I was so excited. My big brother was going to take me along on one of his adventures. The whole time I dressed and ate breakfast, he teased me along, but would not tell me where we were going – it was a surprise. I can still feel the pride and expectation. When I was all ready, he said, “Are you ready? I’m going crazy. Want to come along?” I tried so hard not to show the hurt. I suppose that is a good illustrtation of our relationship through life; it was close, but not safe. Although we grew up to see the world from very different points of view, we had a strong bond and underlying affection. As critical as he could be of me, I never felt he didn’t love me. His passing is very disorienting.
Knowing where you stood with Dick was definitely NOT what I most loved about him. I could have wished he was more forgiving. However, I understand the devotion of his friends and extended family because one of Dick’s absolutely great traits was the way he threw himself into a project if it would help someone – anyone - and included an interesting challenge. He loved using his considerable ingenuity and whatever resources he had at hand, whether they were a laser printer or a snow plow, to solve a problem and make things right. I must say, he never slighted me on that account – he always helped me out. For as pessimistic as he could be, he had a great sense of humor, and when he chose to show his charming side, coud be the best company you could ask for.

As a USNA roommate with Dick and Charlie, I had great admiration for RC's energy's and indomitable spirit. What a calm demeanor Dick had, with little causing him any consternation. That fall, I was suffering from a debilitating kidney infection and regret that during that time, I was a bit of a weak sister. In February, I emerged from a one month stay in the USNA hospital returning as their roommate. Never a dull moment, more as an observer of Dick and Charlie's antics and camaraderie. It still does not seem possible that such a blow could fell "this mighty Oak." God Bless You Dick and Your Kind Soul in Heaven.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dick thru his finance’ and my very good friend Gene Cressman. There were so many good times whether it was conversations stopping by the shop or going out to dinner with Dick and Gene. He was a man of compassion and always putting others before himself. I was present today at the funeral home even though it was outside and across the street then at the cemetery from 100 yds away and had the honor to listen as Jim Fisler played taps. It was both beautiful and emotional. I won’t say goodbye Dick - just see you again one day. God Bless

As I remember Dick Salmon I recall many things we had in common:
-We both came to USNA from New Jersey.
-We both were members of the 12th and 17th companies.
-We both had brothers in USNA class of 1963.
-We both were one of six in the class of 1966 to graduate without
receiving a demerit in conduct over four years.
-We both served as Surface Warfare Officers on destroyers after graduation.
When I broke my leg Youngster (Sophomore) year I was in the hospital and
was unable to go home for Christmas leave. Dick made a poster board size
Christmas card for me that was signed by many midshipmen in the 12th company.
I cherished that card at the time and still retain it as something memorable.
I sent Dick a get well card mentioning all of the above and hope that he was able
to receive and appreciate it before he passed. He will greatly be missed.

Dick, I can’t believe you are gone. I choose to remember our good times. We had many fun times on our motor home trips as Dick and Neil were growing up. I was proud to be your support during those years as a borough councilman and ultimately mayor. In recent years, discussions with you were always interesting. I am thankful we were able to remain friends. RIP Dick. You will be missed.

I was an occasional customer of Harry and subsequently Dick from the early 70’s through 2005 when I retired. I always appreciated his sardonic wit and cogent appraisals of events of the day and the work products were exceptional. I’m sorry to learn of his passing and extend my condolences to his family and friends. RIP

Dick was an amazing pinochle player! I can remember playing with Dick & Eileen when Sam and I started dating way back in 1973! I think his trick was to keep his heat down low! My hands would turn blue and the cards would fall out of my hands (that’s my story and I am sticking to it!) LOL! Sam and I enjoyed so many wonderful memories with Dick! Dick, Eileen and their boys stayed with us for a couple of weeks when we were stationed in Germany and I will never forget camping with them in Disney World! Dick left us with his 2 amazing sons, who are truly his best legacy. Rest In Peace Dick! We love you!

We have so many great memories of Dick, known as "Fish" to our Navy Lacrosse team members. He was stubborn, very direct, honest and always had a quick smile after any edgy, fun comment. For that reason and many more, we will greatly miss him and our prayers and love go out to Gene and their family. He was as special a man as they come. God Bless him and all who loved him.

Memory of Academy roommate Dick Salmon:
RC was a great roommate for our last three years at the Naval Academy. The fact that we had the only two man room for two of those three years was extraordinary. Every other classmate had three, four or more roommates.RC never sweated the system and was always a calm mentor to any plebe during a "Come Around". Even if the Plebereally screwed up. RC graduated cherry (zero demerits in those 4 years). He was no saint, but just a solid good Midshipman and roommate - - as long as I kept my hands off his LaCrosse Stick. I am sure he quietly felt that anybody who fenced foil should wear a skirt, even though I was captain of the Fencing Team.I took a couple of demerits and weekends restriction to the Yard for him first class (senior) year. He brought a cuckoo clock from home and left it on the closet shelf. After about a month and when he went home for a weekend, I hung the clock on the window frame of our room. We forgot it was there, but one evening the OOD(the duty Officer Of the Day) entered our room before taps. We braced up and sounded off, "Midshipman 1st Class(Salmon/Votava), Sir!!" The OOD looked around, said "carry on" and left. No sooner had the door closed, the OOD kicked it back open, and demanded: " Whose cucKoo clock is that!?" Dick and I looked at each other. RC knew it was his, but I had hung. After a long pause, I said, " It is mine, Sir". The OOD ordered (to a note taking Plebe assistant),"Mate, take his (my) name!! and to me, take it down!". That episode could have been a double Class A offense? Twountruths? It was RC's clock, but he didn't answer the question - and it was not "my" clock. I have that cuckoo clock. RC sent it to me about ten years ago and thought I ought to have it. Since, it cost a few weekends restriction. Maybe we were both guilty, but neither one of us "bilged (told on) his classmate".After my repairs it hangs in our bed room; a fond memory every 30 minutes . Charlie Votava, Capt, USN Ret, USNA '66
