Obituary of Richard C Salmon

Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Richard C. Salmon "Dick", age 76, died on April 27, 2020. Dick moved to Pitman from Moorestown, NJ in 1951. He graduated from Pitman High School in 1961 and the U.S. Naval Academy in 1966 where he was an All-American lacrosse player. His team received the U.S. Lacrosse Team of Distinction on September 28, 2018, in Washington, D.C. Dick served in the U.S. Navy until 1970. He was assigned to the USS Bordelon DD881, home port Charleston, and made his first deployment to Vietnam. He then reported to the Falgout DE324, Honolulu and made his second deployment to Vietnam. Lastly, he went to the Maddox DD731 and guarded the West Coast until 1970. After the service, Dick joined his father at Salmon Signs in Pitman which had been operating since 1961. He served on Council for the Borough of Pitman from 1977-1979 overseeing Public Works. He was Mayor from 1980-1983. Dick was rich in friends and family and could always be counted on for help or wise words. He was a passionate golfer and loved to play whenever and wherever he could, especially his home course in Pitman. He kept in close contact with his High School and Academy classmates and valued these friendships more than anything. He was honest, fair and hard-working. He was also stubborn, hard-headed and unafraid to share his opinions (and he had opinions). You always knew where you stood with Dick, which is what we loved about him most. He is survived by his children Richard C. Jr. (Jennifer), Neil (Erica), fiancé Genevieve Cressman, brother Harry Jr. (Doris) and sister Bette (Chris) Drexler. He was "Poppy" to his grandchildren Luke, Piper, Holly, Grace and Charley; and to his extended grandchildren Robert, Rachel, Sean, Hannah, Laura, Monica, Corrine, Nicole, Andrew, Danielle, Nicky, Joy and Maddie. Funeral service will be private at the Kelley Funeral Home. Interment Hillcrest Memorial Park. Memories may be shared at www.kelleyfhpitman.com. A memorial service will be held at a later date. For those who wish, please send memorial donations to the Pitman VFW Post 6469, 142 Oakcrest Ave, PO Box 111, Pitman, NJ 08071.
