Obituary of Vincent P. Whitfield

Vincent Paul Whitfield of Sewell, NJ and formerly from New City, NY, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2021, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. He was 90 years old. He was born in New York City on November 19, 1930, to Gertrude and Vincent Whitfield. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret O'Connell Whitfield and their five children Maureen and Stephen Cleary of Philadelphia, Pa, Kevin and Donna Whitfield of Punta Gorda, Fl, Peter and Mary Ellen Whitfield of Ashburn, Va, Patty and Joe Arni of Mullica Hill, NJ and Robert and Jennifer Whitfield of Stony Brook, NY. He and Margie have 14 grandchildren (Patrick, Courtney, Kathleen, Colleen, Sean, Jennifer, Brendan, Kevin, Brittney, Alexis, Christopher, Kayla and Kelly) and 13 Great Grandchildren (Fiona, Jameson, Liam, Collin, Abigail, Brayden, Anna, James, Henry, Cameran, Danny, Clair, and Madison. Vincent is also survived by his brother Brian of Gaylordsville, Ct and his sister Sue Weiss of Smithtown, New York. He is pre-deceased by his brothers James, Richard and Kenny. He retired as Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Department of Sanitation in 1988 having joined the Department in 1955 as a street sweeper and steadily rose through the ranks until his retirement. During his tenure with the Department, he was the President of the Department's Holy Name Society. In his retirement, he volunteered at Encore Community Services in NYC and as Sacristan at Mary Mother of Mercy Parish in Pitman, NJ. Friends may greet the family on Wednesday September 8th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the Kelley Funeral Home, 125 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ. Funeral mass will be at 11am on Thursday September 9th at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church (Mary, Mother of Mercy Parish), 161 Pitman Ave, Pitman. Interment Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Memories may be shared at www.kelleyfhpitman.com.
