Obituary of Frederick Charles Hickman

Please share a memory of Frederick to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Frederick Charles Hickman, Jr., age 68, went home to be with the Lord on July 11, 2022. Fred was a lifelong resident of Washington Township and graduated from Washington Twp. High School in 1972. He worked his way through college at the Cherrywood Acme and received his pharmacy degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1977. Fred began his pharmacy career at Mack Drugs/CVS in Cape May C.H. and Sewell. He later left retail pharmacy to work for the South Jersey Hospital System – Bridgeton Division, and retired from Ancora Psychiatric Hospital in 2011. Fred was an avid trumpet player for much of his life. He was "First Trumpet" in the WTHS Minuteman Band, Jazz Band, and the All-State Band. During his college career, he played for the HOBO band and served as a director of the South Jersey Wranglers Youth Independent Marching Band. Fred continued to pursue his musical talents as an active member of the Chews United Methodist Church in Glendora and the First Presbyterian Church in Blackwood. As a member of the church, Fred enjoyed arranging the instrumental music scores for the church band, served as a deacon, and attended Bible studies. In addition to music, Fred's many interests included bowling, playing chess, and history. As a Civil War enthusiast, he enjoyed visiting historical sites and events, and taking weekend trips and traveling with his family. Fred is survived by his devoted wife of 23 years, Joan M. (Rogers), children Alison Bigelow and Ryan M. and grandchildren Levi Hickman and Sabrina and Norah Bigelow. Friends may greet the family Saturday after 9:30am in the Kelley Funeral Home, 125 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ. Funeral service will be at 11am. Interment Hillcrest Memorial Park.
