Obituary of Ruth H Lanning

Please share a memory of Ruth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ruth Hampton Lanning, 93 years, went home to be with the Lord peacefully on Thursday, August 4. Devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Ruth lived a life of love and service, evidenced by her care and concern for others. She was a life-long resident of the area, and was very proud to call Pitman her home for most of her years. She was a graduate of Camden Commercial Business School, and in 1948 she became the Assistant Bursar for Rutgers-Camden. When she left to raise her family, it took four people to replace her. Ruth was an active member of the Pitman United Methodist Church where she was known to greet others with her warm smile. She was the membership chairperson, President of the United Methodist Women, and was in the Wesleyanne Circle. She faithfully served alongside of her husband, Bill, who was the Financial Secretary of the church for 43 years. She loved her church family, and was a real prayer warrior for all who were a part of the congregation. Ruth enjoyed traveling with her husband and family, covering the 50 states, as well as various trips throughout Europe. She was known as a good friend and neighbor to so many as she could be counted on for a pie, a quart of homemade soup, or her sour cream chocolate chip cake. Many remember having a meal at her home, whether a dinner of roast beef with gravy so tasty that you could drink it, or lunch around her kitchen table. "Pop-Pop" and "Mom-Mom" served homemade cheesesteaks or pizza to all who would gather, from a church pastor to her grandchildren and their friends. Ruth loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and that love certainly radiated through her to others. She set the example as a faithful wife to husband Bill for almost 59 years before his passing in 2011. She set the example as a loving mother to Susan (Steven) Crispin, William O. (Christine) Lanning Jr., and Carol (Jeffrey) Crispin. She set the example as a proud grandmother to Joseph (Erin) Crispin, Jonathan (Morgan) Crispin, Kellie Frost, Karlie (Kevin) Jewitt, William O. (Lena) Lanning III, Brian (Paige) Lanning, Amy and April Lanning, Aaron (Amy) Crispin, Ryan, Leah, Joanna Ruth and Rebecca Crispin. She set the example as an adoring great-grandmother to Abigail, Elijah, Naomi, Isaiah and Daniel Crispin, Cameron and Jonathan James Crispin, Micah, Jonah, Judah and Emmah Frost, Solomon and Willow Lanning and Brooks and Emlyn Lanning. Ruth also was a caring sister and sister-in-law, aunt, and a dear friend to many through the years. Although she was limited in her physical abilities in her later years, she was determined to do all that she could to keep moving and celebrate the gift of life to the fullest. "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." Proverbs 31:29, 30 Friends may call on Thursday evening at the Pitman United Methodist Church, 758 N. Broadway, Pitman, NJ 08071 from 6-8 pm and on Friday morning from 9:30 - 10:45 am. The service will be held Friday at 11 am. Interment will be held following the service at Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro, NJ.
