Obituary of Leslie Smathers

Leslie Smathers (nee Cummings) Age 87, passed away surrounded by her loved ones early Saturday morning on August 13, 2016 at Inspira medical Center, Woodbury, NJ. Born in Newton, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Leslie O. Cummings and Grace A. (Preble). She was the beloved wife of the late Donald E. Smathers who passed away in 2002 and sister to the late Bruce, Stearns, and Sally Cummings. Leslie is survived by her two beloved sons Robert E. of Anaheim, CA (Sarah) and James B. of Glassboro, NJ (Ruth). She is also survived by her siblings Allen Cummings, Faith Mueller (Cummings) Margaret Juergens (Cummings), Lewis Cummings, and Louise Levy (Cummings). Leslie was a graduate of Orchard Park High School in the class of 1946. She attended Lake Erie College and University of Buffalo. Leslie and Don moved to Glassboro in 1959. They were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Pitman where they sang in the church choir. Leslie was also a member of the Presbyterian Women and an avid painter. She also enjoyed bowling, bridge, and tennis. Leslie enjoyed family visits with relatives in California, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. She was cherished by her older brothers and fondly referred to as Dot by many. She was a perfect example of a beautiful soul and her support for all members of her family throughout the years was a gift of great kindness and a joy to be remembered for a long time. She will be greatly missed by her brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins on both sides of Cummings and Smathers families. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Pitman.
