Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles Allen Hammell was born on February 21, 1941 in Woodbury, NJ. Charlie lived his early childhood in Haddon Heights, NJ before moving to Barrington. He graduated from Haddon Heights High School in 1959. Charlie enjoyed the Boy Scouts where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. After high school, Charlie attended and graduated from Eckels College of Mortuary Science, though he never pursued a career in that field. He worked for the A&P supermarket chain for several years before joining the International Heavy Construction Laborers' Union Local 172. He worked on many construction sites in southern New Jersey, and eventually moved into the administration of the local as Funds Representative and Auditor. After his retirement in 2003, he spent many hours volunteering at the Robin's Nest in Glassboro, NJ. Charlie enjoyed collecting model trains and reading about hot rod cars. He spent much time learning about his Irish heritage and enjoyed Irish culture, most notably food and music. Charlie is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margaret (nee Fish); three daughters: Colleen Johnson (Christian), Jeanne Reed (David), and Susan Chin (Lincoln); and six grandchildren: Clare, Cara, David, Colin, Gavin and Maggie. He is also survived by his two brothers: James (Moorestown, NJ) and Steven (Washington Twp., NJ). Friends may call on Tuesday from 8:30AM to 10:15AM in the KELLEY FUNERAL HOME, 125 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ. Funeral mass at 10:30AM in Mary Mother of Mercy Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
