I happen on Andy’s Obituary by chance. I send my condolences to the family. I worked with Andy at Westinghouse Research more than 40 years ago. Since I left Westinghouse in 1985, I have not seen him or heard any news. However, the time that we spent working together was memorable. Andy was a talented and remarkable person. I knew of his abilities in science and research from our working together. However, I did not appreciate how practical Andy could be in solving day to day problems until the following happened. Let me tell you my Andy story.
We were having a Westinghouse meeting in a hotel in Eastern Pennsylvania. This involved several Westinghouse divisions and a group of people. Andy and I went the day before so that we would not have to travel early the next morning. As evening approached, we were the only ones that had checked into the hotel, so we decided to go to dinner together. We found a restaurant only a half dozen blocks from the hotel. The weather was mild and we were happy to get outside, so we opted to walk to the restaurant. On the way we came to an intersection with a traffic signal. As the light turned green for the cross street to go, a young women in a car tried to go but the car stalled.. She tried but the car would not start. The traffic behind her was beeping their horns and yelling. She was getting panicked. I thought that we should try to help but that was before cell phones so we could not call for help. I thought perhaps we could try to push her car out of the middle of the street so that the angry traffic people could pass. I turned to see what Andy thought about the situation. However, he was already in the middle of the street. He had already gotten the young women to raise her hood and was under it doing something to the engine. He worked only a minute or two and then lowered her hood. He said now try it. The car started immediately and the young woman drove away. Andy returned to where I was and said; “the choke was stuck in the closed position; it happens all of the time”. In five minutes Andy had solved the problem while I could only wonder what to do?

I have been leading a Bible study with Andy and Margaretta’s participation for a while now, and I consider them both to be friends. I have appreciated Andy’s (and Margaretta’s) participation and enthusiasm in the study, and we regularly have been praying for each other. Andy’s faith in the Lord, and his love and knowledge of the Word, have always been evident, and his presence will be greatly missed. He also lent me his autobiography which was astounding to read. His life was one greatly lived. And we praise that he is now with the Lord.

It has been an absolute honor knowing this wonderful man. Andy would come down to my desk weekly and tell me all his jokes and it would make me feel so happy. He was so knowledgeable and kind. He is going to be greatly missed here at Pitman Manor. We love you Andy! God Bless!
