Obituary of Richard D Zahn

Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dr. Richard David Zahn, age 94 years, peacefully passed away on January 11, 2024. Richard was born on June 11th, 1929. He lived with his mother, Dorothy, and father, David Willard, and an older sister, Carol. He lived first in the Olney section of Philadelphia until age 10, when the family moved to Oak Lane, where he attended public schools (Elwood Elementary; Wagner Junior High; and Olney High School). On his 17th birthday Richard enlisted in the Navy, serving on active duty in the waning days of WWII, with the Atlantic Fleet. He then enlisted in Officer Training, and was commissioned as an Ensign in 1952. He remained in the Ready Reserve and was recalled, serving 2 years overseas during the Korean War, until 1954. He continued in the Naval Reserves, stationed at Willow Grove Naval Air Station, until retiring with the rank of Commander in 1996. Prior to being commissioned he attended The University of Virginia, in a Naval program; and received his BS from West Chester State College; a Master's Degree and a Doctorate in Educational Psychology at Temple University. Over the years he taught in elementary schools; was a principal at Maple Lane School in Claymont Delaware, and taught courses at Temple University. He was a faculty member (and, briefly) an administrator, at Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) from 1960 through 1988. After retirement he continued pursuing his interest in vintage sports cars. He spent many hours sailing on the East Coast and many more riding his motorcycles. He hung up his motorcycle helmet at age 84, but still rode bicycles until shortly before he died. Richard Zahn is survived by his son, David; his daughter-in-law, Lexi; and his girlfriend, Regina Sutton. A graveside service has been planned for Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 11 AM at Gloucester County Veterans Cemetery, 240 N. Tuckahoe Rd. Williamstown, NJ.
