Obituary of Walter Robert Mumie

Walter Robert Mumie, age 69 died on October 9, 2012. Walter was born in Philadelphia, PA to parents John Henry Mumie and Margaret Mona (Stanley). He was raised in Lindenwold, NJ and moved to Pitman in 1972 where he has lived for over 40 years. He served in the US Air Force from 1962-66, where he served maintenance on KC-95 and KC-135 Stratotankers. While attending college, Walter worked as a Technical Illustrator for Main Line Engineering in Moorestown. Walter graduated from Glassboro State College in 1973. That same year began a career at Overbrook Junior High School, teaching Industrial Arts and Technology. He retired in 2001 after 29 years. Walter coached Pitman girls soccer. He also coached wrestling and girls soccer at Overbrook Junior High School. He was a mason with Laurel Local Masonic Lodge #237. While he was in the Air Force, Walter was an avid stock car racer, known to many as "Wild Wally" with his Studebaker. He was a member of the South Jersey "S" Gaugers Train Club and he repaired and restored trains for Antique Trains of Washington Township for over 25 years. Walter also volunteered for many years at the Millville Air Museum. He was also a member of the South Jersey Woodcarvers club along with his brother Bruce. Walter was also well known throughout the Southern NJ craft show circuit with his Christmas and Santa paintings. Walter's other passions included cooking, fishing, airplane and boat modeling, and toy train collecting. He is survived by his wife Betty Jane (Blackburne), son Jeffrey (Kathy), daughter Jill, grandchildren Joshua and Sarah and brother Bruce (Marian). Memorial service will be on Saturday at 11am in St. Peter's Church, 302 Kings Hwy, Clarksboro, NJ. Interment will be Monday at 10am in St. John's Cemetery, Chews Landing, NJ.
