Dr. Howard S. Hausmann passed peacefully on September 26th. Howard earned four degrees from Rowan University and his doctorate of education from Nova Southeastern University. Howard started his career in Blackwood Elementary School. He began working in Washington Township in 1959. Howard started as a teacher and during his 38 year tenure he was principal of seven Washington Township Schools. He was the first principal of Bells Elementary School and under his leadership the school received many awards including the Freedom Foundation Award. Howard retired in 1995. Howard became president of Gloucester County Retired Educators and joined Gloucester County Historical Society. Howard served in the Air Force during the Korean War. After his retirement he became very active in both the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and The American Legion. Howard served as The American Legion Pitman Commander, Gloucester County Commander and State Vice Commander. Howard wrote several articles that were published in educational journals. He wrote "Who was Elwood Kindle?' and "The Wall of Honor." Both books honor the men from Pitman who died while serving our country. Howard is survived by his wife, Penny, daughter Keryl, and his grandson Aiden, with whom he enjoyed many happy years. A memorial will be at a later date.
