Obituary of Mary S. McCabe

Mary S. McCabe (nee Sorg), age 80 of Glassboro, died on October 29, 2014. Born and raised in Ohio, Mary received her bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University. She taught for four years at an elementary school in Columbus, OH. Mary moved to Glassboro with her family in 1963. She was a substitute teacher for over 40 years with the Glassboro Public School System where she taught enrichment. Known as the Ambassador to Glassboro, Mary was involved with many organizations throughout Glassboro and Gloucester County. She was a founding member of the Glassboro/Gloucester County Boys and Girls Club, a founding contributor to Robins Nest and co-chaired the Downtown Glassboro Alliance. Mary was instrumental with the organization of Glassboro Unity Day. She also worked on the historical preservation of the Glassboro Railroad Station and was a member of the American Assoc. of University Women. She is survived by her husband, the Honorable Mayor Dr. Leo McCabe, children Patty (Howard) Kaufman, Beth (Kevin) Reeves, Tom (Karen), and grandchildren Kylie and Paige Reeves, Lauren and Megan McCabe and Michael Kaufman. She was predeceased by her brother Joseph A. Sorg and sisters Clara Welling and Rita Ward. Also survived by a special friend Chris Aveni. Friends may greet the family on Sunday from 6-9pm and Monday 9:30-10:30am in the Church of St. Bridget, 125 Church St, Glassboro, NJ 08028. Funeral Mass will be Monday at 11am. Interment St. Bridget's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Gloucester County, PO Box 742, Glassboro, NJ 08028 or the Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia research at Penn's Abramson Cancer Center and mailed to Penn Medicine Development, 3535 Market Street, Suite 750, Philadelphia, PA 19104, checks can be made payable to the "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania".
