Howard John Shone (aka, "Cookie" Shone), age 85, of New London, NC died Wednesday May 16, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC after a sudden illness. The youngest of five siblings, Howard was born on September 5, 1926 to John William Shone and Lavina Brown Shone in Williamstown, NJ. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Raymond and Edwin (aka, "Honeyboy") Shone, and sisters Gladys Hahn and Belinda Ormsby. Howard was a resident of Pitman, NJ and New London, NC. A graduate of Glassboro High School in 1944, Howard served as President of his class. Howard retired as Plant Manager of Huntsman Corporation's facility in Woodbury, NJ after a long career of service and achievement with Shell Chemical Company and Huntsman Corporation. A Navy veteran of World War II, Howard served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. He was proud to serve on the USS Caldwell and earned his distinction as a "tin can" sailor. Most recently, Howard was a beloved member of Macedonia United Methodist Church in Lexington, NC. He lovingly served as Lay Leader, Sunday School teacher, Lay Delegate for the Western North Carolina United Methodist Church Annual Conference, and Chairman of the Building Committee. Howard enjoyed the fellowship of many church communities in the Gloucester County area, including the Pitman United Methodist Church of Pitman, NJ. While living in NJ, Howard was a committed member of The Gospel Ministries. For over 30 years, Howard delighted in sharing the message of Christ and His gift of salvation with prisoners and the incapacitated. In life, leadership, and his love for the less fortunate, Howard's character was shaped by his faith in Jesus Christ and his love for the Word of God. Surviving Howard is his life-long love and wife of 65 years, Helen Bullock Shone. Howard's legacy continues on through his children: Eileen Shone Grimshaw and husband Steven of Richwood ,NJ; Thomas James Shone and wife Andrea of Mocksville, NC; Susann Shone Griffith and husband David of Monroeville, NJ; Judith Shone Tamaska and Wayne of Glassboro, NJ; and, Jennifer-Bullock Shone and husband Daniel Jaramillo of Fort Mill, SC. Howard and Helen are proud grandparents to Joshua, Katherine, Melissa and Joel Grimshaw; Luke and Jonathan Griffith; Noah and Caleb Tamaska; and, Finn Jaramillo. They celebrate in the joy of five great grandchildren, to date. Family and friends may call on Friday from 7 to 9PM and after 10AM on Saturday in the KELLEY FUNERAL HOME, 125 Pitman Ave., Pitman, NJ.
