Obituary of George Stanley Black

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Stanley Black, 92, passed on to his heavenly reward on Tuesday, April 7. Although born in Philadelphia, he grew up in Bridgeboro and then later moved to Haddonfield, graduating from Haddonfield High School. He graduated from Drexel University with a mechanical engineering degree and worked for RCA (first in Camden and then in Moorestown) for his whole career. Married in 1952 to Gwyneth Purtell, he spent the rest of his life living in Pitman with the exception of a couple of years in the late 50s. RCA sent him to El Paso, TX to work on the Talos Missile Project at White Sands in New Mexico. As part of his work with RCA, he was involved with the making of the communications satellite that went to the moon in 1969. He had quite a variety of hobbies over the years: inventing mechanical devices, working with stained glass, making jewelry, fixing anything that broke down and generally trying to "find a better way" to do things. He enjoyed boating, water-skiing, and sailing. He also loved to travel and was able to go to all 50 states as well as many foreign countries with Gwen at his side. George was a member of the Pitman United Methodist Church and served in many capacities over the years, but mostly known for his decades long help with the trustees. He also set up the first remote worship experience from PUMC to the Pitman Manor, where he lived out his last two years. He was a long time member of Pitman Masonic Lodge #197. He is predeceased by his wife, Gwen, daughters, Margaret and Bonnie Lee, brother William Black, and sister Olive Black Woolston. George is survived by daughters Kathy Black of Upland, CA, Jennifer Black Andrade of Pitman, NJ, and Georgia Black (Glenn) of Kennett Square, PA. Beloved grandfather of Daniel Nelson, Shylar Nelson Schaffter (Matt), Taramin, Tanner and Aubrey Stuber, and Jeremy Andrade (Rebecca). Due to the present pandemic and public safety guidelines, a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Those who wish may send contributions to Pitman United Methodist Church at 758 N. Broadway, Pitman, NJ 08071 for either the Pitman Pantry or Sponsored Children Project fund..
