Jean Audrey Wood (nee Nienstedt), 96, from Elk Township, New Jersey passed away peacefully at the Terraces At Parke Place in Washington Township, NJ on Saturday, January 16, 2021. She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin, in 1993. Beloved mother of Robert, William (Loretta), Jeffrey (Cindy); and cherished grandmother of Matthew, Michael (Lindsay), Jeffrey, Scott, Christopher and Michelle. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Cooley, who resides in Arroyo Grande, California. Jean was born on December 16, 1924 in Long Island, New York. She attended college at Penn State for two years, married Edwin (from Kentucky), and completed her degree from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University). They raised their three sons in Pitman, NJ. She taught at Birches Elementary School in Washington Township, and took immense pride in her work. She retired from teaching after 19 years. Jean was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pitman, where she was also active in their Women's Circle group, and willingly supported the Church financially with their various endeavors. During her life, Jean had a zest for travel which covered cross country, including California, Washington State, and Alaska; as well as overseas to places as far as Africa, China, and the Galapagos Islands. She loved horses, dogs and cats, and everything to do with nature (she was big on camping trips with her children when they were young). Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She will be greatly remembered by her generosity in every way, witty sense of humor, and devotion to her children and grandchildren. The funeral service will be private at the request of her family. Memorial contributions may be made to either the First Presbyterian Church of Pitman, 10 Wildwood Avenue, Pitman, NJ 08071; or the Gloucester County Animal Shelter, 1200 N. Delsea Drive, Clayton, NJ 08312.
