Obituary of Michael Joseph Hess

Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Michael J Hess, of Sewell, NJ passed away on July 24, 2023. He was born in Elizabeth, NJ, on June 20, 1943 to George T. Hess and Myrtle Dye. Mike resided in an Adult Community Parke Place for the past 12 years. Before that he lived in Elizabeth, Vineland, and for over 30 years in Pitman. His North Jersey accent gave away the fact that he had strong ties to North Jersey. Mike served in the U.S. Army from 1961-63 and was in Viet Nam. He was a Police Officer in Vineland and an HVAC technician with several oil companies before his retirement. He worked the Christmas holidays for many years so the younger men could spend the day with their family. Nothing made Mike happier than spending time with his 7 grandchildren. They were his pride and joy. Mike touched so many people and their lives were brighter because he was a part of it. The simple things in his life make up the treasured memories - being a member and taking care of the Gloucester County Certified gardens, taking care of his flower gardens, assembling his train platform, feeding the many dogs in the community with a treat, small trips to Longwood Gardens and his annual Winter Open House Neighborhood Christmas party. Mike was the beloved husband of 30+ years to Linda (nee Kayser) and loving father of Albert (Jennifer) and Robert G. (Marta). He also had two step- sons, Robert B. McCleish (Maureen) and Brian McCleish. He had 7 grandchildren; Michael Hess, Jack McCleish, Curtis McCleish, Emily Hess, Jonathan Hess, Travis McCleish, and Nora Hess. Also survived by his sister in law Phyllis of Cedar Grove, NJ. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Robert and his sisters, Marion and her husband Jack, Bernice (James) of Cranberry, NJ. Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing at the Kelley Funeral Home 125 Pitman Ave., Pitman, NJ, on July 31 from 6PM – 8PM and August 1 from 10AM – 11AM. Funeral service at 11AM. Interment with military honors at Gloucester County Veterans Cemetery in Williamstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the charity of your choice.
