Obituary of Dorothy T. Potter

Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy Mary (Tozour) Potter, 88, of Pitman, NJ, known for her world-wide travels all her life, took her final earthly journey on October 12th to be reunited with her beloved Jason. Dorothy was born on November 22, 1934, in Camden, NJ to William and Dorothy (Gruber) Tozour. Her family moved from Wildwood to Avalon, NJ when she was 2 years old. She attended Avalon's 2-room schoolhouse where she skipped several grades and entered high school at the age of 11. She graduated Middle Township High School, Class of 1950, when she was 15. After graduating from Glassboro State Teachers College in 1954 at the age of 19, she began a teaching career that lasted until her retirement in 1995. She earned a Masters Degree from Glassboro State College in the early 70's. Her first teaching assignment was with the Middle Township School District where she taught from 1954 – 1961. After teaching for a short time in Newport, RI, she would teach for the Department of Defense in Germany for several years, taking advantage of school breaks to travel all over Europe. When she returned to the United States in 1970 she taught for the Pitman School District until her retirement in 1995. She married her long time and best friend Jason Potter in 1992. Her retirement gave her more time for her three great joys - reading, traveling (especially to beaches), and get-togethers with friends and family. She was known to read a book a day and loved making frequent trips to the library in Pitman. Along with her husband, Jason, she would continue seeing the country and the world. For the last decade they especially enjoyed winter getaways to their beloved Folly Beach, South Carolina. They'd love it when family and friends would visit them there during the cold winter months. Dorothy's animated and festive humor, as well having the Tozour Family trait of exaggerated storytelling, made her an entertaining participant in lively get-togethers. She was a longtime active member of the First United Methodist Church of Pitman. Dorothy is survived by her nieces and nephews, William Tozour III, Lewis Tozour (Linda), D. Lynn Schwartz, Steven Tozour, Diane Henry (Michael), and George Tozour (Susan), and many great and great great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Tozour, and her brother-in law and sister-in-law Chris and Janice Potter, as well many caring and cherished family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Jason Potter, her parents William & Dorothy Tozour, her brother William Tozour Jr, and Lynn's husband Jack Schwartz. Funeral Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Pitman, 758 North Broadway, Pitman, NJ on November 15th. Family and Friends may call beginning at 10:00 am. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am with the Reverend Dr. James Bolton, Jr. officiating. the service will be live streamed on the church's website pitmanumc.org. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Pitman, 758 North Broadway, Pitman, NJ 08071; the Jack Schwartz and William Tozour, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, Cape May County Technical High School, 188 Crest Haven Road, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210; or any food bank of your choice.
