Robert Slaughter posted a condolence

I met and came to know Dick through his friendship with my Mom, Gloria Slaughter, whom he taught to sail (and who then taught me). We clicked instantly over our shared military experience and love of automobiles. He was that rarest of human beings. A true character who is one, just because who he is, not because he pretends to be! From his signature handle bar mustache to his irascible whit. His passing feels like the movement of an era itself. See you on the high ground, my friend.

Richard Zahn, a man who we admired and loved, touched so many people during his 94 years. I was a student at Glassboro State and fortunate to have him as a professor for a course titled “Foundations of Education.” He was an engaging teacher, and you never knew what to expect each time you entered his class. He would lecture standing, sitting on his desk (with his pipe) and occasionally stand on the desk to make a point. He was a character indeed.!
Richard and I have been dear friends for 23 years. Although he is no longer with us, he left an imprint on everyone he touched. I will miss him immensely, but cherished memories which will remain with me forever.

Commander, Fair Winds and a Following Sea, as your sails dip below the horizon they rise on another. It was a great pleasure and honor to know you. We both enjoyed your company and stories. You were truly blessed.

Richard Zahn, aka “Uncle Dick”
by David Booth, son of Dick Zahn’s sister Carol Zahn Booth.
I remember a lot about my Uncle Dick, but maybe a few stories rise to the surface. I remember visits with him from times when our family visited, and from later visits myself. All of those early visits included rides in strange cars and chances to see cars in pieces and pieces of cars, as well as motorcycles and boats.
Everywhere we went there were people he knew, or strangers he wanted to talk to. I visited him in the 1970s and we got out early on a Sunday morning to start up a Siata race car he was restoring (But Just for a little while, “because the police sort of frown on this…..”) Every stop sign “HEY, what car is that” The answer was a history of the marque and a history of the engine he was using and the years of manufacture and that he knew someone in Italy who furnished him detailed information that he needed.
Every auto parts store we visited: “Hey Dick! Did you find a gasket for your Saab 99? How is the Bristol coming? Do you still have the Vincent?”
Cruising down a four-lane main road in the rain and the Datsun we were driving stalled and came to a stop. “Just a minute…” as he jumps out and gets into the trunk for parts and tools. “Got Spark? Carb Jets OK? Battery OK. FUEL FILTER: Got one” Quick swap-out and on the road. Driving along he explains the reason for the Navy Sailor’s collar and that he was gifted a part of an airship that crashed and he wonders which crash that was. (Not the Hindenburg) Quick side trip to an antique and memorabilia shop to get an airship poster (In German, featuring the Hindenburg, but the illustration has the old german crosses and not the swastikas. “Do You like airships? I have lots of books about them you can read”
Now out on the water, after saying hello to dozens of people at the marina. He shows off the seat pads and other fittings he made for several sailboat owners on his treadle sewing machine (“Nothing better for upholstery…”) Sailing along and everyone is waving and shouting hello. I asked why is that and the answer is that his partially home built wooden sailboat is the type of boat people would like to have, but takes too much work to revarnish every year. The mast is faceted rather than round just because he likes the look of sunlight reflecting off the facets.
As the years passed I wasn’t able to see him in person, but occasionally a letter would come with car news or airplane stories, or a call would come late at night starting: “Did I tell you about the time I flew in a Pitcairn autogyro?”
So that’s Dick Zahn from one relative’s viewpoint. He will be missed.

Condolences to all whose spirit connected with Dick. He was my friend, mentor and chuckle buddy for over 30 years. We walked many Pitman streets as he described the history /activity of houses en route. Walks were sprinkled with theological, and psychological opinions and much laughter. I will miss him dearly as we all will.

To Dave, Lexi, Regina and family... Compared to all of you, I've only known Dick for a few short years. But they were some great years with Dick. There were the many conversations we had at Fireside for breakfast..to the ones we had sitting at his table at home. I learned a lot about Dick...his life..his experiences and more. There seemed to be so much to him..his education, his vocation...and the things he did on his vacations: Motorcycling across the US; sail boating; repairing old cars and racing both cars and cycles....and successfully putting together a large grant for the College. He seems to have covered "all the bases". And let's not forget his military background and his (during WWII and Korea) sacrifice with the Navy. We were both pilots and enjoyed talking about flying, as well. I envy the longer friendship and relationship that Dave and Regina had with him. I plan on being there for his services. God Bless all of you, Dave, Lexi and family..and Regina, for all of the wonderful things you all did for Dick! Our love and condolences to all of you.
