TRIBUTE TO AUNT LUCY
Lucy Saia
September 22, 1908 – October 26, 2009
Today, we live in a country that is out of control on every level imaginable. Crime dominates every major city, and the suburbs and rural areas are not much better. The disappearance of morals and decency is punctuated by murder, abortion, drug and alcohol abuse, insurance fraud, theft, white-collar crime, child pornography, abuse, and political corruption. Every federal agency, state, county, and local government is overspent. It would take hours to list the evidence of social and moral decay. (2023 – Not much has changed)
For almost a century, Aunt Lucy lived a decent, moral, and simple life that insulated her and those she cared about from this decline and decay. But, life was difficult.
She never won an award; she was never praised by a group or politician; she never wrote a book; she never held office; she never invented anything; she never was rich (she was actually poor); she never did anything to make her famous; and her obituary was probably one of the only times her name appeared in a newspaper. She had none of the trappings that our society associates with success, accomplishment, and status. Sadly, lives such as hers are commonly ridiculed today for being “boring,” “unaccomplished,” or “unexciting.” But, let's not be so fast to judge.
Just imagine for a moment a country filled with people of Aunt Lucy=s work ethic, character, and morals. She worked all her life for a pittance, cared for her ailing mother single-handedly for decades, and lovingly nurtured a little boy not her own for as long as it took. Almost one hundred years of goodness and Godliness.
Aunt Lucy’s world would be one constantly promised to us by politicians, promised but never delivered.
A country based on how Aunt Lucy lived her life for a century would be a country with no crime, no abortion, no racism, no prejudice, no hate, no envy, no war, no hatred, no welfare, no divorce, no theft, and no corruption. Instead, it would be a country filled with unconditional love, compassion, dedication, responsibility, kindness, and generosity.
It sounds too far-fetched to be true. But all we have to do to make this country great again is to celebrate and to emulate her life and her example, to pass it on to all those around us. She showed us that we don't need elaborate programs to improve life, we just need to improve people=s behavior to elevate our country and our lives.
What greater tribute to Aunt Lucy can we make than to hold up her life as a shining example of enduring value to be emulated?
God was kind to Aunt Lucy by granting her a long and good life on Earth.
We can only hope that He is continuing to embrace her in heaven.
She will be missed here on Earth, but it is comforting that she is surely resting in peace with Him forever.
She was one of five remarkable women. Imagine that. My cup runneth over.
