Dr. Robert Allen Batten, age 85, died on October 21, 2008 at his home in Pitman where he lived for 55 years. He was the beloved husband of Marie (nee Beloff) for 52 years. Dr. Batten practiced dentistry in Pitman for 39 years and belonged to the American Dental Society, the NJ Dental Society, and the Southern NJ Dental Society. He was a former trustee of the Presbyterian Church at Woodbury. He was a Paul Harris Fellow member of the Pitman Rotary Club for 55 years and a member of the Pitman Board of Health for 30 years. He was also a member of the former Citizens Committee for Better Education in Pitman and served on the Lipari/Alcyon Lake Decontamination Committee. Dr. Batten was a veteran of WWII where he was a medic aboard the hospital ship Jarrett Huddleston. He was a graduate of Bucknell University and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. He was a charter member of the TKE Fraternity, Beta Mu Chapter, at Bucknell University and the Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity at the University of Pennsylvania. He is survived by daughters Marie Suzanne Woodard of Silver Spring, MD and Carolyn Jean Pye and son in law William Pye of Wallingford, PA and grandchildren Evan and Larissa Phifer of Silver Spring, MD. Friends may call on Friday after 9am in the Kelley Funeral Home, 125 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ. Funeral service will be at 11am. Interment Greenwood Cemetery, Tuckerton.
