Obituary of Lillie Woodnut Stanwood Buck

Please share a memory of Lillie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lillie Woodnut Brown Stanwood Buck was born on May 30, 1914 in Camden, NJ, and lived most of her life in Pitman. She was the daughter of businessman and former mayor of Pitman, William B. Brown. Lillie was a graduate of Pitman High School class of 1932 and went on to graduate from Bucknell University with a degree in education. Lillie was a lifetime member of the Pitman United Methodist Church. It was there she met and married Howard Castor Stanwood, in 1938. During the next 14 years, they had 3 sons. After Howard returned from service in World War II, the couple bought and operated Stanwood Sweet Shop on Pitman Ave. Lillie started her teaching career as a substitute teacher at Pitman School but stopped teaching to marry and have a family. Unfortunately, her life with Howard was cut short when he died in 1956. Now alone to raise three boys, she returned to teaching at Cherry Hill West High School, where she enjoyed teaching US History until her retirement in 1974. After retirement, Lillie could be found riding her bike, visiting her sons and grandchildren, on the golf course, or traveling with her many friends. Lil loved keeping up with current events, especially politics. She also enjoyed spending winters in Tequesta, Florida. Eventually, Lillie married Robert (Bob) Buck, who shared her love of golf and family. She and Bob moved to the Fountains at Cedar Park in 1998 where they lived the rest of their lives. Lillie is survived by her 3 sons, William (Kristine) Stanwood, Ron (Bette) Stanwood, and Howard Mark (Angela) Stanwood; her grandchildren, Lynne Stanwood Young, Howard (Jane) Stanwood, Michael (Kathy) Stanwood, Chris (Karen) Stanwood, Beth Stanwood, Jason (Martha) Stanwood, and Eric (Becky) Stanwood; and 13 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her two husbands, Howard Stanwood and Robert Buck; brothers William and Curtis, and her sister, Anna; as well as daughter in law Barbara. Friends may greet the family on Wednesday after 10am in the Kelley Funeral Home, 125 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ. Funeral service will be at 11am. Interment private in Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Pitman United Methodist Church Mortgage Fund, 758 N. Broadway, Pitman, NJ 08071. Memories may be shared at www.kelleyfhpitman.com.
