Obituary of Edward Joseph Campbell

Edward Joseph Campbell, Jr. "Ed", age 83 died on January 5, 2014 at his home in Pitman after a gallant 10 year fight with cancer. Ed graduated from Cape May High School in 1948, he received his Bachelor's Degree and two Master's Degrees from Glassboro State College. A proud veteran, Ed served in the 32nd Infantry Regiment of the US Army from 1948-52. Serving as Sergeant 1st Class in Heavy Mortar from 1950-1951, Ed fought in the Inchon Landing and the Chosin Reservoir, two of the bloodiest battles of the Korean War. He lived in Wenonah from 1957 until he moved to Pitman in 1969. Ed began his 50 year career in education at Cape May Public School. He taught at Wenonah, Gateway Jr./Sr. High and Washington Twp Schools before going into administration. He became Principal at Pitman Memorial School, West Deptford Middle School and retired from Lower Township Elementary District as Superintendent. Ed also was an adjunct professor at Gloucester County College for over 20 years and at Glassboro State College. Ed was actively involved in various leadership positions in his community. He served as President of the Pitman Board of Education, Cub Scout Leader of Pitman Pack #218, Vice President of Gloucester County College Board of Trustees, Commodore of the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City, Wenonah Fire Company Volunteer, Gloucester County Library Commission and was Democrat Party Chairman in Pitman. Ed also proudly served as Commander of Pitman VFW Post #6469 and Treasurer of the Gloucester County VFW. A true patriot, Ed always organized the Memorial Day Veteran's Celebrations in Pitman. Memorial Day and 4th of July were his favorite holidays. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Georgia Kapp Campbell, children Stacy (David) DeClement, Patrick (Lisa), Heather (Jerry) Delia, grandchildren Hayden Delia, Mallory DeClement, Austin Campbell, Jolie Delia, Grant DeClement, Alexa Campbell and sisters Mary Sheets and Carol Changlin and several beloved nieces and nephews. Friends may greet the family on Wednesday 6-9pm and Thursday 10-10:45am in Mary, Mother of Mercy Parish (Our Lady Queen of Peace Church), 161 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ. Funeral mass will be Thursday at 11am. Interment Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pitman VFW Post #6469, PO Box 111, Pitman, NJ 08071.
