Ralph C. Albers, age 79, lifetime resident of Pitman, New Jersey, passed away at home on Saturday, September 6th, 2008, with his wife of 45 years, Gail O. Albers, at his side. He leaves behind three children: Marsha Clark (James), Steven Barnard, and Robert Barnard; four grandchildren: Rebecca, Emily, Stephanie, and Robert; and a brother, William Albers, also of Pitman. Ralph was a well-known sports star at Pitman High School, excelling in basketball and baseball. Upon graduation in 1948, he signed with the Boston Braves baseball organization (now the Atlanta Braves). As a fire-balling left-handed pitcher, Ralph played for five years with the Braves until an untimely accident ended his career. Ralphs interest in sports continued in later life. He is well known around Gloucester County golf courses as an avid and excellent golfer. Following his sports career, Ralph entered the banking field with First Camden National Bank in Camden, New Jersey, becoming a junior officer. He later worked at the First National Bank of Newfield and at Pitman National Bank. Following his banking experience, Ralph managed the Farm Services Association. In 1985, while managing Farm Services, Ralph was appointed by the Gloucester County Board of Agriculture as Administrator of the Agriculture Health Service Program. He also served on the National Advisory Committee of the Safemark Program for the American Farm Bureau. Upon liquidation of the Farm Services Association, Ralph established Albers Farm Supply in Clayton, New Jersey. During this time he administered the New Jersey and Farm Family Health Insurance Program until his retirement. In November 1996, Ralph was given a Distinguished Service Award by the Gloucester County Board of Agriculture for outstanding community service. He was also honored by the New Jersey State Senate and General Assembly for his dedication to the New Jersey Farm Bureau. In addition, Ralph received a special tribute from the Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders for his commitment and dedication to agriculture in this county.
