Eleanor "Bette" K. Helverson (nee Kenney), age 84 died on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at her daughter's home in Clayton, NJ, surrounded by her family and friends, after a courageous battle with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
Bette was born in Philadelphia, summered in Pitman from 1925-1945, and then became a year-round resident of Pitman in 1953, where she lived until 2008. She attended Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Glassboro, NJ. Bette was a member of Pitman Eastern Star Chapter 57 and the Women's Club of Pitman. She also served as President of the Pitman Golden Age Club for 7 years before it was disbanded. Bette also belonged to the Catholic Golden Age Club of Pitman. She was very active at the Glassboro Senior Center for many years. Bette was retired from RCA Deptford in 1979 and from MacAndrews & Forbes in Camden in 1989. She then continued to work as a receptionist for the Pitman Manor for 10 years.
Bette was the daughter of the late Matthew and Eleanor Rebecca Kenney (Ball). She is survived by her son Robert J. (Sandy) Linn, Jr. of Bellefonte, PA; daughters Beverly Linn (Wayne) Guy of Mickleton, NJ and Elizabeth "Betti" Linn (Tom) Carpenter of Clayton, NJ. Bette was predeceased by her husband Joseph and daughter Barbara Jean Riggs. Her stepdaughters Claire Cliver, Rebecca Contrabasso, Judy Gerner and stepson Joseph K. Helverson also survive her. Bette has 21 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Friends may call on Sunday 6:30-9:00pm in the KELLEY FUNERAL HOME, 125 Pitman Ave, Pitman, NJ with Eastern Star service at 8pm. On Monday friends may call after 1pm in the Bethlehem United Church of Christ, 137 South Main St, Glassboro, NJ with funeral service at 2pm. Interment Hillcrest Memorial Park, Washington Twp.
